Spring…

Spring has the habit of putting color into your life so, inevitably, I have to flash back to LA and come on strong. Obviously, downtown leads the way as tall buildings bask under the incessant blue sky. These are both round South Grand by 1st/3rd….my hangout off an on for gosh, 10 years? The following is a exercise in scale; enjoy!.

Color and…

Good morning from Los Angeles!….It has been (a long!) while I know, so I want to get right on it and celebrate two things that I have been working on lately: color and lo-fi. By color I mean the way I see color, sometimes pushing those values to bring out the spirit of a capture. But careful….are you helping the shot? does it really need to turn from blue into emerald-green to go to the next level? As artists only we can only be the judges of that and ultimately do what has been done for millennia, follow your instincts. Maybe it’s my Tarantino influence but sometimes reds aren’t red enough and you have to do something about it; and at the end of the day….why not?!  And by lo-fi I mean the ever-present and wonderful challenge of working with restricted or available means, in my case my cell phone. By restricted means I don’t only mean ‘less’, just having or using different advantages. I will never stop admiring people who do great things with few resources; there is an inherent quality and a direct relationship between the struggle that comes from working with less-than-ideal-and-what-is-available and the all around test to capture the same quality of spirit with abundant resources. To me is every artist must practice the art of doing with less, often. Can you make a purse out of a simple square piece of leather, can you take a photograph using heat and thermal paper; how far can (and must) the boundaries be pushed to achieve the kind of simple design that not only contains the essence but creates that emotional connection.

Below I have chosen works captured in and around Paris, but keep an eye for some LA stuff coming up. If anything this city can offer color, so add some to your life and drop me a message if you feel like it.

Simplicity…

Good morning!..As simplicity is the highest form of sophistication I was eager to post three of my most recent images as published in my FB artist page. It may or may not be a agreed upon by everyone but it is every artist’s obligation to search and capture the basic lines, the simple form once in a while, at least. A focus on minimalism enriches the heart they say. More to come in the near future, in the meantime please enjoy!

March…

Good morning!…Still feeling the chill but Paris is slowly warming up with the feel and colors of Spring. If you are planning a trip over this is probably the time to do it, early blossoms, young growth, not that many tourists yet and still, museums and cafes to enjoy to the fullest.

My latest captures here take me once more to LA first, and my study of flow in contemporary architecture. You’ve seen my Getty waves and I’ve attempted to take it to the next level and dig deeper into its sensual form. Following that is a short stint I did last Sunday at La Défense, my preferred business district here in Paris where I go to find new angles amid new construction taking place every week it seems. My rendition is that of the back of a well known building (seen further down my stream) mirroring its facade. The tones I gave the photograph fit well with it’s ancient feel – someone said that of a medieval sword – yet an absolute contemporary structure otherwise. On that subject, many contemporary architects get their inspiration from medieval, Roman and Greek structures when they design.

BTW (and without further ado) I have inaugurated a new blog dealing with Paris Fashion through my street photography: I kindly invite you to visit http://julianescardofashion.wordpress.com  for its maiden page, and hit subscribe!

Procrastination…

Good morning!!….In spite of having procrastinated (by a lot this time!!) I wish to start this post with my usual cheery GM. We all deserve a good morning, a good day and if we can help it a good life. At least there is one thing we can control, and that is what we choose to see, and how we choose to see things. I believe strongly that there is beauty all around us….in people, in things, in the things we smell (or choose to smell if you get my drift). In my case a large part of my life out there, walking consists of looking straight up and today’s post makes no exception to that fact and the beauty that exists thanks to architects. Please enjoy and as always, feel free to comment, ask or simply offer your opinion.

Thank you again for allowing me to procrastinate (as if you did have a choice…lol). I trust that with four postings I was able to compensate a little. Above all thank you for following my work and as usual you can head off to my facebook page for more  info and up to the minute posts.

Cheers!

Of Volumes and Glass…

Good morning!!…Two photographs I recently took have captured my heart……..and I don’t mean to say that my own work captures my heart, but as I always thrive to keep things simple, I think I achieved just that here. And therefore….yes, I am pleased. The first is of an 18 story building – a straight up looking view against one of the bottom glass panels, and my intention was to capture the ethereal quality of the scene. The day was right, the sun was there, no clouds to distract. I was ready to put my eye on the X. A friend and colleague of mine said of this same capture (and I think it serves to illustrate what I saw): “It’s like a hall of mirrors, where you don’t know which way is the right way up. The range of blues in this is stunning, particularly to the right of the image, it’s resoundingly Phantom of the Operaish in a way…the phantom historically created mirror traps…and this reminds me of it.”…..I love it when images evoke thoughts of this nature, and stir imagination. The second image is again, a very simple study of volumes and yes, again, glass is involved. In this case I had to resort to a black and white monochrome to make the said volumes stand out. I trust it worked…..yet you are the ultimate judge of that. Please enjoy!

LA to Paris…

Good morning!….my 51st post finds me back in Paris with the energy typical of this time of the year…..Spring – So…..my first post pays homage to my all time favourite building, the Disney Concert Hall by Frank Gehry. In this take I sought an angle that would display its power though perspective and I hope I was able to achieve that. My second post lands me back in Paris and for that I went to La Défense, a business district not ‘technically’ in Paris, but easily  reached by metro and as far as I feel it ought to be. The piece shown surrounds an office building and for the most part lies hidden from the general public.

Please enjoy these two architectural works and, as always, don’t hesitate to comment or ask any questions.

Opera and wine…

Good morning!!….my walks continue and here are a couple of contemporary pieces taken in Paris and Saint Émilion respectively. The first is a slice of the Opéra Bastille (the new one v the old and magnificent Opera Garnier…). The second I came across while touring a winery in St. Émilion called Château Soutard – as usual one is keeping up with the guests so I had but one second to choose how to capture these steel stairs…..I saw them and forged ahead before anyone could block my view. For one beautiful second the wine took second place and I didn’t mind making a fool of myself by rushing ahead. I hope you like them……..enjoy!
